Help
This page covers how to use Shiki and what to do when something doesn't work. If you don't find your answer here, email support@shiki.studio.
Quick start
- Open the app and tap Sign in with Apple.
- Pick 2–4 habits you want to do every day. These are your non-negotiables — small, repeatable things that matter to you.
- The app drops you on the Today tab. Tap a habit's circle to check it off.
- Tap Add photo proof to attach a quick photo. (Optional, but recommended — it's the accountability part.)
- Repeat tomorrow. And the day after.
That's the core loop. Everything else — crews, sessions, the pill — sits on top of that.
Habits
Add a habit. Habits tab → tap the + button → write a label and an optional target note.
Edit a habit. Habits tab → tap a row → edit label, target note, or visibility.
Reorder. Habits tab → drag a row by the handle on the right.
Archive. Habits tab → swipe left on a row → Archive. Archived habits don't show on Today and don't count toward your streak, but their history isn't deleted.
Cap. You can have up to 7 active habits at any time. This isn't punitive — it's the cap that makes "non-negotiable" meaningful.
Daily reset. Every day at the start of your local day (per your time zone in Settings), your check-offs reset to zero. Yesterday is gone. Today is fresh.
Photo proof
When you tap Add photo proof on a checked habit, you'll see two options:
- Take Photo — opens the camera. Camera permission is required (asked the first time only).
- Choose from Library — opens the iOS photo picker. No permission prompt is required; the picker runs in its own process.
After capture, you can add an optional caption (up to 140 characters). The photo is uploaded and visible to:
- You, in your own check-off history.
- Anyone in a crew you've joined who shares that habit.
Photos auto-delete after 24 hours. This is intentional. Shiki isn't an archive — it's accountability. The proof shows up in real time, then it's gone.
If you want to delete a photo sooner than 24 hours, tap the photo from your own history → Delete.
Crews
A crew is a small group (2–8 people) that holds each other accountable. Crews are the social mechanism of Shiki.
Create a crew. Crew tab → Create a crew → name it → set its kind (private or public).
Invite people. Inside a crew → Invite → either share a link or pick from your contacts.
Join an existing crew. Tap the invite link a friend shared, or browse public crews from the Crew tab.
Crew non-negotiables. A crew can have its own shared habit (a "crew NN") — e.g. "everyone does cold plunge daily." This shows up as a row on Today for every crew member with the same label in their personal habits.
Leave a crew. Inside a crew → Leave. Your history stays in the crew (other members can still see what you did while you were there), but you stop appearing in the active list.
Activity feed. Inside a private crew, scroll down to see the Photo proofs feed (other members' photos with optional captions) and the Activity feed (text-only check-ins).
Sessions
A session is a timed window of doing one of your habits — like a 25-minute focus block or a 10-minute cold plunge. Sessions let you invite crewmates to "do it with you" across distance.
Start a session now. Today tab → calendar icon (top left) → Start Now → pick a habit → optionally notify a crew → Start.
Schedule a session. Same flow, but pick "Schedule" and set a time.
Join a crewmate's session. When a crewmate starts or schedules a session, you get a push notification (if you have notifications enabled and you share the same habit with them). Tap it → Join.
The pill. When a session is running, a small pill shows at the top of every tab with the habit name and the elapsed time. Tap it to re-open the timer. Minimizing the timer doesn't end the session — it stays running until you tap Stop or Done.
Done vs Stop. Done counts as a successful session and checks off the habit. Stop ends the session without a check-off (useful if you bailed early).
Notifications
Settings → Notifications. You can toggle:
- Daily reminder — a single nudge at a time you pick.
- Crew daily digest — a summary of your crew's activity from the last 24 hours.
Streak intervention prompts (sent if you're about to break a streak) can be moved to a different time of day but cannot be muted entirely. The whole app premise depends on showing up; we will gently bother you if you're sliding.
To allow notifications in the first place, iOS asks once when you sign in. If you said "no" and want to enable them later: iOS Settings → Shiki → Notifications → Allow.
Account
Sign out. Settings → Sign out. Your data stays on the server; signing back in restores it.
Delete your account. Settings → Delete account. After confirmation, everything you've ever done in Shiki is removed from our servers within minutes. This cannot be undone.
Change your display name or avatar. Profile tab → tap your name → Edit.
Time zone. Settings → Account shows your time zone. It's set automatically from your device. If it's wrong, change your iOS time zone in iOS Settings → General → Date & Time.
Troubleshooting
The app shows "Not authenticated" or asks me to sign in again.
Your session expired or was invalidated. Sign in with Apple again. If you've signed in and the issue persists, force-quit the app and re-open.
My check-off didn't sync to my crewmates.
Crewmate updates depend on a network connection on both ends. Pull-to-refresh on Today to force a sync. If your crewmate still doesn't see it after a minute, both of you should restart the app.
I tapped a check-off button and saw an error.
Most errors are caught and shown as a banner with a readable message. If you see one that looks like raw database text ("permission denied for table X" or similar), please screenshot it and email us — that's a bug.
I joined a crewmate's session but the timer didn't open.
Try tapping the session pill at the top of the screen — the timer may have minimized. If there's no pill either, your join didn't register; pull-to-refresh on Today.
A photo proof I added isn't showing up.
Photo uploads happen in the background. Wait ~15 seconds; the photo should appear on your check-off and in your crewmates' feeds. If it's still missing after a minute, the upload failed — re-tap Add photo proof and try again.
Push notifications stopped working.
iOS Settings → Shiki → Notifications. Confirm "Allow Notifications" is on. If it is, sign out + back in — that re-registers your push token with our servers.
The Inspiration tab is empty.
That's expected for now. The Inspiration feed is a planned feature; until it ships, the tab is a placeholder.
I can't find a feature I expect.
Some features (the photo feed, story rings, crew NNs) only appear once you're in a crew. If you're solo, the app is mostly the Today + Habits tabs.
What Shiki doesn't do
We get asked about these — they're intentional choices, not gaps:
- No public feed of strangers. Crews are small and private (or named-public but still scoped). The whole point is people who'd actually notice if you didn't show up.
- No streak as currency. You can't buy streak freezes or game your number. Daily reset is the rule.
- No long-term photo archive. All photos auto-delete after 24 hours. If you want to keep a photo, save it from your camera roll before posting.
- No leaderboards. Crews don't rank members. The reward is being seen by people you care about, not a number going up.
- No in-app purchases. Shiki is free.
